Children's Poetry Writing Competition

Poetry is like music.

It’s all about playing with language and sound, and children love to play!

The sound of poetry can make reading more fun for children, hence the popularity of authors such as Julia Donaldson and our own Suzanne Hemming. It is a form of expressive art which can be incredibly important for a child’s development.

Poetry has the ability to teach children skills far beyond the actual creative process of writing such as problem solving, understanding feelings & emotions and gaining a perspective on the world around them.

Calling All Mini Poets...!

We are asking all your mini poets to get creative! To celebrate National Poetry Month throughout April we are thrilled to be launching our first Children's Poetry Writing Competition 🎉

Inspired by a collection of our sellers including the wonderful Nettlefold, where founder Zoe Wheeler has created a beautiful brand inspired by and featuring the poetry of her late Grandad, we want to encourage your little ones to put pen to paper!

The Mama Brown & Co Children's Poetry Writing Competition is now open and accepting entries on the topics of LOCKDOWN or SPRING. These topics have been chosen to encourage children to reflect back on the past year sharing their thoughts and feelings about the pandemic, or to look forward to the positivity of the new season of Spring and all the images and senses that awakens.

Entries must be original works, ideally no more than 2 verses in length, and will be judged by a panel of experts within two age categories:

  • Poetry on the topic of LOCKDOWN or SPRING from those aged 4-7 years

  • Poetry on the topic of LOCKDOWN or SPRING from those aged 8-11 years

The competition will close at 11pm British Summer Time on April 30, 2021 with  winners announced through our website and by email no later than May 7, 2021.

Winners will have their poem made into a print gifted to them to keep by our wonderful sellers Nettlefold and Rachel Gale, aswell as receiving a poetry book and a Winner's certificate!
